Playtest Character: Reeni Thula

The dhosari by Gary Dupuis.
This week, Perry is running us through the third level of Purple Mountain that he wrote. Recently, Perry wrote up a race called the dhosari that was based on this art for the Fehr's Ethnology series. Most of the races developed for this series have come from existing art pieces that I commissioned for other products, re-imagined as playable races.

Perry worked to make this quadribrachial (his made up word, not mine) into a reasonable, although strange race. Here is what he did.

  • +2 Strength, +2 Charisma, -4 Wisdom
  • Large (reach 5 ft.; must use undersized weapons)
  • Speed 30 ft.
  • Quadribrachial - +4 vs. trip, +2 Climb, can fight with four arms but suffers -1 penalty to such attacks.
  • +2 one Perform skill
  • +1 to attack a creature that target's you charge (because they are normally a slave race)
Now that the Advanced Race Builder's Guide is out, we have an opportunity to see how the dhosari would fit into those rules.

0 RP - Humanoid (albeit strangely-shaped); I do not consider them to be aberrations or monstrous humanoids because they lack darkvision. They possess few or no supernatural abilities.
7 RP - Large (The dhosari follow the benefits of this option closely with the exception of ability modifiers; we do not gain +2 Str, nor do we lose -2 Dex [which sort of cancels things out])
-1 RP - Weakness abilities (+2 physical, +2 mental, -4 to another)
0 RP - Standard languages
4 RP? - Quadribrachial combines half the bonus from Sturdy (1 RP / 2) with a +2 skill bonus (1 RP), and includes a penalty if you use multiple arms to attack but does leave the option for multi-arm attacks. Multi-armed is (4 RP/8 RP) but the dhosari cannot move and use four arms so it is not as combat effective as the multi-armed racial ability. They gain the benefit of quadraped in terms of tripping but not in terms of speed plus they need to by more expensive armor because of their unusual size.
1 RP - +2 to one skill
1 RP - +1 to attack a creature that attacks your charge (similar to hatred).

For a total of perhaps: 12 RP

It was commented in a recent review that a dhosari paladin who can gain a rider instead of a mount at 4th level would be overpowered. I'm not sure how overpowered at 4th level paladin dhosari would be but I'm going to see if a 3rd level dhosari paladin is overpowered in our Purple Mountain campaign. So here is my character.

We use the default array for character generation at my table.
